Begging is the practice of imploring others to grant a favor, often a gift of money, with little or no expectation of reciprocation. But now the poor or needy people has adopted it as a profession. Beggars may be found in public places such as transport routes, urban parks, and near busy markets. Besides money, they may also ask for cigarettes or other small items.
The worst issue which Pakistan is facing today is ‘Street Begging’. The Nation is suffering from the crucial situations of Poverty which has forced hundreds of people to commit suicide, forced women to sellout their Children and forced young’s to leave their Homes and start begging. According to latest survey 74% of our people living under poverty line earning less than 4000/ rupees per month which is very difficult for a person to live in so little amount, even one cannot imagine to survive. But a Street Beggar is earning more than a Person doing hard slog.
Street begging disturbs Public life because usually this beggar on the Roads, Streets& Bazaar’s chasing people for petite amount. To gain more attention and sympathizes they generally irritate public with their disgraceful mannerism. They emotionally black mail the genders by telling their gloomy stories & by showing their disabilities. Begging is supposed to be an easy source of earning Money. This is the reason that most of the physically fit young persons are usually seen begging on the Streets. This profession now has become an Industry (Mafia) where young men, Women & Children are mostly trained, recruit and relocated. These Beggars and specifically Children come from the Cities of Kohat, Rahim Yaar Khan, Multan, & Rawalpindi.
According to a survey Beggar Children earn 200 or 250 rupees per day and handover entire money to the Mafia (Which works for this profession) and that Mafia keep a big chunk of earning and leave minimum amount with to these Children to take home. This Mafia is taking more benefits of the Street Begging.
Karachi is a city of fun, entertainment and success. Many government officials have done a remarkable job in making the city a better place by investing in its infrastructure. However, what is the future of this city or if talking on the macro perspective, what is the future of this nation? Well, the future is the girl who knocks on your window convincing you to buy flowers that can buy money for a meal. The future is the little boy who walks around frantically looking for car windows that he can clean in order to save himself from getting abused by the his “bosses” running the beggary business. Instead of having these children focus on their future by providing them with education, love, motivation and support to excel in their lives, they’re given flowers and wipers to make a living at the age of 9 or 13. Yes, the future of Pakistan is on the streets.
The number of children on the streets has nearly tripled since last year. Many of these children don’t focus on how to excel in their education and make a successful career. They’re more focused on earning enough money to fill their stomachs. Instead of being a doctor, lawyer, teacher or businessman, the children have made their professional careers in begging. The Punjab Government is taking the initiative of helping these children by providing them with incentives in order for them to reach the same level as other children. However, this initiative was taken in May 2010. Nearly six months have passed and the kids are still on the street. We need to come to the forefront and fight for the innocent on the streets. Their voices are unheard, their prayers unanswered.
As Kamran Mansoor has said
“Hate begging,not the beggars.”
Their hands that are out for begging are in the hope of a better day, a better life and a better future. Let’s make it happen! And create a better Pakistan!
Pakistani Beggars are Professional Mafia which cuts the child’s body legs and things and use them for the work force of thug humanity. Pakistani beggars are great physiological thief in Pakistan, you theft and you don’t know a reason .they come on buses and normal places ask you some of money pray for u if you are young say you get a wife or you get girl say you for parents prayers and so on ! If you old they say you u will succeed and so many talk like that if the statement hit person gave money to them.
“The people I worked for made me beg and use drugs. I was addicted to ‘solution’,””, says “Ansar”, a boy rescued off the streets of ,
Lahore’s red-light area, by the Child protection and Welfare Bureau Set-up in 2004.
“They burned my arm and my stomach with solution, so that I could beg more,” he says when inquired about a scar on his arm. The left side of his entire chest is burnt down to his stomach. “I went to a doctor in the neighbourhood who took me to a hospital where I had to stay for a month
and a half”, he adds. Ansar had to give 70-80% of his daily earning to the mafia who employed him.
Another one, Haider from Kasur recalls, “I was 10 years old when I ran from home; then Bashir Dare-ala took me, but I ran from home again, but he
got hold of me one more time. The gang took money from my family, Rs500 or sometimes Rs1,000, saying they provide for my meals three times a day
and give me shoes and clothes.”
Such is the story for the everyday begging child. The government, silent on this matter. Investigations were ordered in 2004 but got nowhere at all.
The public is confused, on whether they should give money to these poor and helpless kids, or not do so in order to stop funding for drug barons and warlords. Steps must be taken to stop the beggary mafia because the number of such mafias becomes out of control of the government.
Beggars in Pakistan are reportedly using mobile phones to acquire hefty alms in the name of religion. As a matter of routine, they reportedly send messages asking for a credit of Rs. 10-100, offering in return a place in paradise. Muhammad Usman, a businessman, said that he received almost 10 messages a day from a beggar.
One message reads, "I am a poor man and my daughter is admitted to hospital. If
you have faith in one God, please send me a credit of at least Rs. 10. God may reward you and take you out of all troubles," the Daily Times quoted Usman, as saying. Another mobile user said money should not be given to unknown senders of messages, as this was no way to beg. These message senders exploited the people's faith and mobile users should be aware of the situation.
"Customers often complain of unknown messages calling for money. The beggars misused credit sharing facility on mobile phones," said Muhammad Rajid, a PCO owner.
They not only use drugs like Bond, cocaine, coke, marijuana etc but they are the biggest group of buyers of these drugs. Selling lungs and kidney for money is also part of their lives. For this, they can easily find doctors who would even take life for money and are present in anonymous hospitals and clinics. Begging from house to house and giving information about the residents and structure to professional dacoits also goes in their line of work. They are more mysteries in the life of a beggar than one can assume. Government should take bold and serious steps. Not only to control them but to eradicate their communities and mafias from our society.
Begging is a profession which boosted up many criminal tendencies in our society like Drug abuse, Narcotics selling, Robbery, Prostitution, Sexual abuse and Coercion.
In all, Beggars are such functionless people who do not have passion to do something positive in their lives. Some Beggars may really be needy, but there number is less. Now, our Government and we the masses have a responsibility to take appropriate measures to eliminate this curse from our Society. The Government should introduce some schemes and trainings through which they can earn their future living. There should be strict Laws to restrict Beggary and Police should have powers to punish those who are responsible for bringing them on Streets. ‘Zakat’ funds should be utilized on deserving persons. Job opportunities should provide to the eligible persons according to their Skills and aptitude. If any professional Beggar, refused to do so than such soulless characters should be severely punished.
